“Lye’s development of the direct film method could be seen as a perfect example of the radical, ‘do it yourself’ approach he had developed in New Zealand. Unable to afford to buy or rent a camera, he came up with a way of by-passing technology. Having spent years trying unsuccessfully to find a sponsor for more films in the style of Tusalava, he shifted to a new kind of imagery in A Colour Box, based on years of practice at making doodles and drawings of movement. This training gave him the confidence of hand and eye to paint ‘figures of motion’ on narrow strips of film with amazing speed and precision. […] With one person making all the images, his direct film-making is simultaneously the most primitive and the most sophisticated example of ‘auteur’ cinema.” - Roger Horrocks

» - Roger Horrocks
